Supporting Families Affected by the Criminal Legal System: How the Families Forum Creates Connection, Understanding and Hope

Families who have a loved one in the criminal legal system often carry emotional burdens that are rarely acknowledged. Many describe feeling sad, angry, ashamed, or lonely, and some experience judgment or discrimination from their own family and friends. These feelings can be overwhelming, and the shame and stigma surrounding incarceration often make it difficult to reach out for help.

At Counselling and Social Support Services (CASS), we recognise that families need safe, confidential spaces where they can talk openly, connect with others who understand, and access practical support. This is why we proudly partner with the Community Restorative Centre (CRC) to deliver the Families Forum, a bi‑monthly online support group for families and friends who have loved ones in prison or recently released.

The Hidden Impact on Families
Having a loved one in custody affects far more than the individual, it reshapes the emotional, social and financial landscape of the entire family. Many families experience:
  • Shame and stigma, making it difficult to seek support
  • Judgement or discrimination from others
  • Isolation, especially when they feel they must keep their situation private
  • Stress, uncertainty and grief
  • Additional challenges for families who are new to Australia, including settlement issues, language barriers and intergenerational trauma
Without support, these pressures can compound, affecting mental health, relationships and overall wellbeing.

What Is the Families Forum?
The Families Forum is a confidential online support group designed specifically for people who have a loved one in the criminal legal system or who has recently been released. It provides a safe space to share experiences, learn from others and access practical guidance, without fear of judgement.

Sessions are held every two months via Microsoft Teams, and participants can join using only their first name and email address. Cameras can remain off to protect privacy.

What Families Gain from the Forum
The Families Forum is built around three core goals:

Reducing Social Isolation
Families often feel alone in their experiences. The Forum brings people together through shared meaning and shared experiences, helping them feel understood and less isolated.

Increasing Understanding of Services and Supports
Navigating the criminal legal system can be confusing and overwhelming. The Forum helps families learn about available services, community supports and practical pathways for assistance.

Building Coping Strategies
Participants learn strategies to support themselves and their families both before and after their loved one’s release. This includes emotional coping, communication and reintegration planning.

Why CASS Is Committed to This Work
CASS is dedicated to supporting families affected by the criminal legal system through:
  • trauma‑informed practice
  • cultural humility and respect
  • lived‑experience‑informed facilitation
  • strength‑based approaches
  • emotionally safe, non‑judgemental spaces
We understand that families are often the invisible victims of the justice system. The Families Forum helps bridge this gap by offering connection, understanding, and practical support.

Who Can Attend?
The Families Forum is open to anyone supporting a loved one in custody or recently released, including:
  • parents
  • partners
  • siblings
  • adult children
  • friends
  • carers
There is no cost to attend, and no referral is required.
